The Montgomery County son stopped for gas at Casa Blanca Sunoco on Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring on Sunday, March 10 and picked up five of the $10 $250,000 Cash Winfall games due to his sister’s recent $500 win.

He then took the tickets home for his mother, who didn’t get around to playing them until the following day.

“She was on the phone and scratching the games,” the winner’s son, a Silver Spring resident, told lottery officials. “She had two left, so I grabbed them and played them for her.”

The son says he was “shocked” to see the money bag symbol on the bottom row of one of the scratch-offs, which meant she had won all 25 prizes listed in the ticket’s play area. Each had a $10,000 prize, making the ticket a top-tier winner.

“I showed it to her and she thought it was only $250,” said the son.

After signing the ticket, the mother locked it away in a safe before arriving at headquarters in Baltimore with her son to claim her prize on Tuesday, March 12.

The winner says she plans to use the money to pay down her mortgage and take care of some other bills.

Three more $250,000 top prizes remain in the $250,000 Cash Winfall scratch-off game, as well as eight $10,000 prizes and many others ranging from $20 to $1,000.
